I'll admit, it is an extreme way to clean a motherboard, and it has it's risks (obviously), but if done carefully and with patience, IMO, it does a great job of cleaning up just about any mess.Įdit: I should mention that even though I've successfully done this, i wouldn't try it on a multiple hundred dollar motherboard, I tried this using a reportedly dead socket A motherboard about 2 years ago. GIVE IT TIME TO DRY, if you power it on with sitting water, say good bye to your motherboard. Keep your distance, and don't train it in one spot. You can help it along by lightly going over the board with a hair dryer (ON LOW) for half an hour to an hour. Let the motherboard air dry for at LEAST 24 hours. (You'll be disgusted to hear that I found some sort of maggoty/mothy carcasses in the PCI slots). I more or less moved all the sitting water out of the contact areas. I used a (real) compressed air container (not the canned dusters, they're pretty weak) to blow out all PCI slots, under PCI slots, etc. In my case, the motherboard came out clean as new. Put the dishwasher on cold, and remove the CMOS Battery. I said, what the heck, lets give it a try!

I had googled how to properly clean a motherboard, and I was obviously surprised to see that people had put their motherboard(s) through the dishwasher. It was junked at a family friends' computer shop. The computer (obviously) stopped working. In fact, one previous motherboard owner had spilled coke (Yes, the brown, sticky stuff) on his computer case, and somehow it leaked in and covered the motherboard. I have washed a couple motherboards off in the dishwasher. A motherboard with no power poses no threat to corrosion and/or shorting, etc if it is unplugged, and the CMOS battery is removed. Most people will probably think i'm joking, but. Then apply your new stuff.Įdit: oh yes, do use a grounding wrist strap if you don't already have one, or discharge your body the best you can as stated in the post above mine if you are el cheapo. After scraping it off genly, just swab over it a few times with q-tips and alcohol to clean anything off of it. I guess a handheld razer blade would work just as well.

(within reason) Its in Maximum PC magazine where they recommend a screwdriver for scraping off old stuck on thermal paste, so I know its safe. The big flat surface on top like my AM2 is just a cover that you can go ahead and do whatever to. If you need to get the stuck on thermal paste off the top of the processor, you can use a flathead screwdriver gently if you have a "capped" processor. Just dip the q-tip in the alcohol, let it drip back into the bottle if there is too much, then go about gently swabbing the crap off of it making sure not to bump anything or break off pieces. I just use alcohol and a q-tip if I need to clean a motherboard. Make sure everything is VERY dry before reassembling. It works fantastic, just don't overapply it. I've used this type of spray to get water off of $20,000. If the cleaner you are using is of the spray type, in a compressed can, then just quickly spray the components in a sweeping motion, much like you were spraypainting something.

I would recommend applying the cleaner to a lint free cloth first, then gently wiping the motherboard and any cards. Also, make sure you are GROUNDED first, I suggest rubbing any exposed metal on the inside of your case before touching any PCB cards.Ĭontact cleaner that is designed for use on electrical components would be safe to use on a motherboard. PSU's can still hold a charge and leaving them plugged into the Motherboard could, potentially, cause a problem. First, before doing any cleaning using a solution, make sure your computer is UNPLUGGED and your motherboard power connectors are disconnected from the motherboard.
